You’ve probably already guessed what it is; The Battery pack which powers the lightweight aluminium body to reach mind-boggling acceleration. Elon has hailed the battery upgrade as a “profound milestone.” The battery has the same chemistry as before but can now store more energy in the same amount of space. The 100-kilowatt battery pack means the high end versions of the Tesla Model S, called the P100D, will be the fastest accelerating car in production.
If you’re not familiar with the models of Tesla, there is a P90D which is currently the fastest car Tesla produce. Tesla now claim the P100D will be capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in only 2.5 seconds, that’s 0.3 seconds faster than the P90D. The new battery will also address the anxiety people have about electric cars, the extra storage means you can easily achieve over 300 miles from 290 miles currently. As an example Elon Musk said, “in cool weather you could travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles – a 400 mile drive, without recharging.” The new upgraded models of the Tesla Model S and Model X will help fund the more affordable Model 3 which is expected to be released to the mass marketing in 2018.
