It’s a simple matter that needs some thought before you decide where to put your solar panels. It can severely affect your solar energy production if you don’t take it into consideration. If you’re panels are all connected in series on a ‘String Inverter’ then it means that your solar panels are only as good as their weakest link. For example, if one solar panel is shaded and is only producing half of what it should, then all the other panels on that string can only produce the same amount. We have lots of experience in designing solar panel systems around shading issues and have even been able to move them to different roof spaces. There is SolarEdge technology available which allows each panel to act independently of each other, if shading is an issue you might want to consider talking to our team about SolarEdge. Tip – Keep an eye out for any debris that shades your panel, it could be something as small as a leaf that could have consequences. If you do find your panels getting dirty quite often it might be a good idea to arrange some cleaning periodically.
In order to fit a 4kW system on your roof you are ideally going to have enough roof space to fit 16 solar panels. They aren’t as small as you think, most panels are about 1.6m tall by 1m wide. In order to reach your desired sized system, space could be an important factor. However, there are a couple of solutions to solve this problem. The first is to split your system onto different roofs, this could be on your home roof and your garage roof meaning that you have more space to play with. The second option is to use high wattage panels to make up the loss of having less panels on your roof. Our team of experienced engineers can discuss them with you during your free site survey.
It’s a common misconception that you need a plum South roof in order to have a solar panel system. A South-facing roof will only produce a fraction more than an East/West facing roof, so little that you will hardly even know. Our team has designed solar panel systems for all types of roofs, we’ve installed hundreds across Pembrokeshire and West Wales.
